The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) was founded in 1987 by a number of open universities in the Asian region who realised the significant contribution of distance education in democratising the provision of learning opportunities to mankind. They also shared a common belief that the development of distance education can be obtained through friendship and close exchanges among institutions of open higher learning.
The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) strives to widen the educational opportunities available to all people in Asia and to improve the quality of the institutions in terms of their educational management, teaching and research. It promotes education by distance teaching systems, as well as professional and ethical standards; develops potentialities of open and distance education; cooperates with official bodies and others directly or indirectly interested in education at a distance; and facilitates cooperation with other similar regional and international bodies.
The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU) is the most relevant organization in the field of distance learning in Asia.
In 2015, the AAOU recognized Bircham International University as an associate member of good standing.
In 2020, Bircham International University was incorporated in Hong Kong and got its name and operations approved according to the Hong Kong Education Ordinance (Cap.279) and sections 2 and 3 of the Non-local Higher and Professional Education Regulation Ordinance (Cap.493). A new BIU office was opened in Hong Kong to better serve Chinese and Asian students.
Then, the Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), after careful examination granted Bircham International University full membership status together with the most relevant distance learning universities in Asia.
