CALED's mission is to contribute to the improvement of quality in distance learning higher education for institutions in Latin America and the Caribbean.
CALED provides advisory assistance and review for distance higher education programs requiring quality assessment. CALED develops quality standards in Latin America and the Caribbean by defining a model to evaluate quality, applying this model in different universities and distance education programs and establishing a database of comparative standards to assess the best quality outcomes in different scenarios and institutions.
The creation of the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Quality in Distance Higher Education resulted from the interest and needs of the institutions attending the congress on Quality and International Accreditation in Distance Higher Education held in October 2005 at the University of Loja, Ecuador.
In 2021, Bircham International University was listed as part of the selection of distance learning institutions in the USA at the website of CALED, the Latin American and Caribbean Institute for Quality in Distance Higher Education.
