The African Council for Distance Education (ACDE) was formally launched in January 2004 at Egerton University, Kenya. In August 2005 ACDE held its Inaugural Conference and General Assembly at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, during which it was resolved to establish a permanent Secretariat in Nairobi, Kenya.
According to the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE) Quality Assurance criteria, distance and online education have a critical role in accelerating Africa’s socio-economic development. But Open and distance Learning (ODL) in higher education in Africa is faced with two major challenges of diverse system and practices that need convergence of understanding as well as the effective and efficient management of access, quality and cost.
The African Council for Distance Education (ACDE), a continental educational organisation committed to expanding access to quality education through ODL and e-learning, in partly responding to these challenges, established a Quality and Accreditation Agency to develop and enforce a regulatory quality assurance (QA) framework for distance and on-line education in Africa.
In 2024, Bircham International University was granted full institutional membership into the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE), together with the most relevant and prestigious distance learning universities from each African country.
