UNAD, the National Open and Distance University, is an educational project that began under the name of the University Unit of the South of Bogotá, UNISUR, during the administration of Belisario Betancur.
UNAD emerged, through Law 52 of 1981, as a national public institution attached to the Ministry of National Education and transformed by the Congress of the Republic through Law 396 of August 5, 1997, into the National Open and Distance University UNAD.
UNAD, La Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia, has been characterized by its commitment to communities and populations that have lacked access to technical, socio-humanistic, and community training. It has also contributed to the recovery of social fabric, the creation of employment opportunities, and training for citizen participation.
The mission of the National Open and Distance University (UNAD) is to contribute to education for all through open, distance, and virtual learning environments. This includes pedagogical action, social outreach, regional development and community action, inclusion, solidarity, research, internationalization, and innovation in all its forms. This includes the intensive use of technology, particularly information and communications technology, to foster and support autonomous, meaningful, and collaborative learning, generating a culture and entrepreneurial spirit that, within the framework of a global and knowledge-based society, fosters sustainable economic, social, and human development for local, regional, and global communities with quality, efficiency, and social equity.
UNAD, La Universidad Nacional Abierta y a Distancia, projects itself as a leading organization in open and distance education and virtual learning environments, recognized nationally and internationally for the innovative quality and relevance of its educational offerings and services, and for the commitment of its academic community to integral human development and the eco-sustainable management of local, regional, and global communities, and for its contribution to this goal.
As part of its vision, it undertakes actions such as its active participation in AIESAD - the Ibero-American Association of Higher Distance Education - and other collaborations in which it has invited Bircham International University to collaborate.
